Internship at ADT
“It was an absolute pleasure to host Fanni. She is lovely. And yes it would be great to give the opportunity to another recipient. We would be more than happy.”
Garry Stewart Artistic Director, ADT
Fanni Varga’s report:
I would like to say thank you one more time to the Tanja Liedtke Foundation. With their scholarship I got a life time experience. I was able to go and train with Australian Dance Theatre for 5 weeks.
When I left Franfurt in November I did not know what I got myself into. I was heading to a country which is the most distant from any kind of other places. Australia was always a mistery for me. I have heard a lot about it but yet I could not imagine how life goes there.
Meeting Paul White, who used to dance in ADT, had a huge impact on my internship destination. He is an amazing performer and getting know excerpts from Tanja’s piece, Construct, convinced me I have to try to get to Australia and meet this amazing company there.
During the 5 weeks in Adelaide I had the opportunity to watch the company rehearse their piece from 2010, called Proximity. A very dynamic piece with visual affects. I haven’t seen dance mixed with video affects like this. It is fresh and exciting for the audience to experience such a complex production. The movements are fast and very exact, the dancers have to learn how to cooperate with cameras, and how to actually use them. They have multiply tasks during the piece and they fullfill the expectations greatly. I was taught material from Proximity by the dancers which was a completely new experience for me. I had to learn how to become quick and clear in my movements, how to learn as fast as possible and revisit material from day to day. I trained everyday with the dancers and that made me feel part of the company. The team(the dancers, the director, the assistant, the whole crew) was really welcoming and helpful. I feel this internship made me much wiser and clear in making my decision. As a dancer I find it really important and hard to make quick and right decisions. However, experiences like training with ADT are definitely shaping a dancer’s personality. All the new techniques that I got to know there, such as break dance or tumbling, will be beneficial for my future. I really hope one day I will be able to return to Australia.
